Gartner Magic Quadrant for Disk-Based Backup and Recovery

Gartner Statement about Magic Quadrant and ExaGrid by Dave Russell, Vice President, Gartner Research

The "Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Disk-Based Backup/Recovery" report published on January 28, 2011, replaces the "MarketScope for Enterprise Backup/Recovery Software" retired in July 2010. To be included in this Magic Quadrant, a vendor has to offer a software application that captures data itself (i.e., backup software). Therefore, the Magic Quadrant does not include vendors that offer VTL or disk-based backup appliances with deduplication unless they also offer a backup software application.

Based on these criteria, ExaGrid and several other disk-based backup vendors were not included in this Magic Quadrant. However, in no way should this be interpreted as a reason to exclude ExaGrid from consideration as a provider of disk-based backup with deduplication appliance that augment or replace a tape library behind the backup software application.
