Medina General Hospital Improves Data Backup
and Recovery Capabilities with ExaGrid
Weekly full backups reduced from 12 hours to four hours
Westborough, - Mass. February 26, 2008- ExaGrid Systems, Inc. (http://www.exagrid.com), the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with byte-level data de-duplication, today announced that Medina General Hospital has deployed ExaGrid to reduce its backup window and improve data restoration capabilities to aid in disaster recovery.
Medina General Hospital (MGH) is a 118-bed healthcare facility in Medina, Ohio. MGH offers a 24-hour emergency department that serves more than 31,000 people a year, and a full-service family birthing center that delivers nearly 1,000 babies annually. MGH’s Brunswick Campus, offers a variety of services, such as an Immediate Care Center, an imagery center and occupational and physical therapy.
“The ExaGrid system has significantly reduced our backup window and we’re confident that our data is available to us at any time,” said Michael Skrant, MIS operations supervisor at Medina General Hospital. “Using tape, our full backups took more than 12 hours to complete, and we had occasional issues with bad tapes that made our backup times even longer. Full backups with ExaGrid now take only four hours.”
Prior to installing the ExaGrid system, MGH backed up all of its business data, including its Microsoft® Exchange® server, SQL database, shared folders and files and other business documents locally to a server and then backed the server up to tape. Since installing ExaGrid, MGH’s weekly full backups have been reduced by 66 percent, from 12 hours to four hours. The hospital now also performs differential backups each night in just 20 minutes.
“ExaGrid’s byte-level data de-duplication is very effective at reducing our data,” said Skrant. “Because it compresses the data and stores only the byte-level changes, we are able to maximize the number of backups we keep on the ExaGrid system. It’s comforting to know that we have many weeks worth of backups on the ExaGrid, and that we can quickly and easily restore data in the event of an emergency.”
