MemorialCare Medical Center Deploys ExaGrid for Faster Backups and Restores
Medical Center Cuts Backup Window from 24 Hours to 6 Hours
Westborough, - Mass. April 8, 2008 - ExaGrid Systems, Inc. (http://www.exagrid.com), the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with byte-level data de-duplication, today announced that MemorialCare Medical Center has installed a two-site ExaGrid system for faster backups and restores, and to enhance its ability to quickly recover data from an off-site location in the event of a primary site disaster.
MemorialCare Medical Center is a nationally recognized, not-for-profit health system with six hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange County, California.
"We looked at several different disk-based backup solutions and chose ExaGrid based on its price, performance, manageability, support and reliability," said Jorge Cepeda, network engineer at MemorialCare. "The ExaGrid system has enabled us to significantly reduce our backup window and has taken the pain out of our backup process."
MemorialCare installed two ExaGrid disk-based backup systems, placing one in its Long Beach facility and another at a co-location facility in Torrance, California. The ExaGrid systems work alongside MemorialCare’s backup application, Veritas NetBackup™. The facility is planning to place ExaGrid systems at each of its hospitals to replicate the data between locations for disaster recovery purposes.
MemorialCare backs up patient and business data from more than 150 servers each week. Prior to installing the ExaGrid system, the entire backup process took from 12 to 24 hours each day. Since installing ExaGrid, nightly backups have been reduced to six hours.
"ExaGrid’s post-process approach to data de-duplication makes the system extremely fast and efficient, and enables us to perform restores very quickly, even on the largest files," said Cepeda. "We spent a lot of time comparing different approaches to data de-duplication in live situations and it was clear that ExaGrid’s post-process method was superior."
ExaGrid's byte-level data de-duplication technology stores only the byte-level changes from backup to backup instead of storing full file copies. This unique approach reduces the disk space required by 10:1 to 50:1 or more, delivering unparalleled cost savings and performance.
