ExaGrid Expands Longstanding Veritas Certification of OpenStorage Technology Plug-in

Enhanced Plug-in Certified for Use with Veritas NetBackup 5200 and 5300 Appliances

Westborough, Mass., December 21, 2016 – ExaGrid®, a leading provider of disk-based backup storage with data deduplication solutions, today announced that it has expanded its longstanding support of Veritas’ OpenStorage Technology (OST) to include the Veritas NetBackup 5200 and 5300 line of appliances, including the 5330 and 5340.

ExaGrid provides second-generation backup storage with adaptive data deduplication, a unique landing zone, and a scale-out storage architecture for the industry’s fastest backups, restores, and VM boots. Veritas NetBackup customers who utilize the Veritas NetBackup 5200 or 5300 appliances for their NetBackup master and media servers, but not for backup storage, can now take advantage of all of ExaGrid’s architectural advantages for long-term retention of backup data.

ExaGrid supports Veritas’ OST to provide deeper integration between Veritas’ backup applications and ExaGrid’s target-side backup appliances with deduplication and replication. This integration provides better backup performance and reliability as compared to CIFS or NAS and balances backup traffic across the network interfaces of all ExaGrid appliances in its GRID system.

Optimized duplication of backup images provides information to NetBackup about ExaGrid’s replicated backups, eliminating the need to catalog the remote backup copies and resulting in the fastest disaster recovery. In addition, flexible retention options allow longer-term retention at either the primary or secondary site(s) to better meet each customer’s specific disaster recovery requirements.

Optimized synthetic backups allow more frequent incremental backups (which reduces workload on backup clients) while maintaining the safety, convenience, and efficiency of regular full backups. NetBackup Auto Image Replication (AIR) automates and accelerates disaster recovery from one NetBackup domain to another NetBackup recovery domain so that when a disaster occurs, NetBackup at the disaster recovery site has all of the necessary catalog information already in place to immediately call for the data from the offsite ExaGrid system across backup domains.
The ExaGrid OST plug-in package can be downloaded from any ExaGrid server using the ExaGrid web-based GUI and loaded onto the Veritas NetBackup 5200 and 5300 Appliances following Veritas’ documented procedure. NetBackup’s Administrative Console is then used to configure NetBackup resources for the ExaGrid sites.

ExaGrid’s approach provides faster backups by performing deduplication after landing backups to disk. ExaGrid maintains the most recent non-deduplicated backups in a landing zone for fast restores and VM boots, and stores longer-term deduplicated retention data in its repository storage. Due to ExaGrid’s scale-out architecture, which adds compute with capacity, the backup window stays fixed in length even as data grows.
